Practical guidance for using AI responsibly

Ethical Resources helps professionals and small business owners use artificial intelligence with greater confidence, care and professional judgement. We create practical tools that turn complex questions about privacy, confidentiality, risk and responsibility into clear decisions that can be applied in everyday work.

Why Ethical Resources exist

I understand the uncertainty that arises when AI enters a profession built on trust and confidentiality. When you work with people’s personal information, it is not enough to be told that AI can save time or improve productivity. You need to know what is safe to share, where the risks lie, and whether using a particular tool could compromise the trust placed in you. Unfortunately, the advice is often confusing, contradictory or too broad to apply with confidence.

I created Ethical Resources to turn that uncertainty into practical guidance. The resources are designed to help professionals move with the times while continuing to protect confidentiality, remain accountable and rely on sound professional judgement.

What we believe

Practical before technical

Professional judgement still matters

Professional judgement still matters

Before we can use AI with confidence, we need to understand the decisions we are making around it. Knowing what information is safe to share, when to pause and when human judgement must take priority matters more than understanding every technical detail. This foundation helps us use AI thoughtfully while continuing to protect the people who trust us with their personal information.

Professional judgement still matters

AI can support our work, but it cannot replace the care, understanding and professional judgement we bring to the people who trust us. We still need to consider each person’s circumstances, review what AI produces and decide whether it is appropriate and safe. The responsibility for protecting the person behind the information always remains with us.

Ethics should be usable

Professional judgement still matters

Confidence comes from clarity

Ethical guidance should help us make better decisions in the situations we face every day, not remain a collection of abstract principles. We need clear, practical questions that help us recognise risk, protect personal information and decide when to pause before using AI. When ethics is easy to understand and apply, it becomes a natural part of how we care for the people who trust us.

Confidence comes from clarity

Professional judgement still matters

Confidence comes from clarity

Confidence with AI does not come from knowing everything or ignoring the risks. It grows when we understand what AI can safely help us with, where its limits lie and when we need to pause and think more carefully. With clear guidance, we can move forward without allowing either fear or enthusiasm to override our responsibility to the people who trust us.

What we create

 Resources designed for real decisions

Ethical Resources creates practical guides, decision tools and learning materials to help you work through the questions that arise when AI becomes part of your professional practice. Each resource breaks complex concerns about confidentiality, risk and responsibility into clear steps you can apply in real situations. The aim is to help you feel more informed and confident, while keeping care, professional judgement and the people who trust you at the centre of every decision. The collection will continue to grow as new questions, risks and practical needs emerge within professional AI use.

About The Founder

Ethical Resources was founded by Shirleen Schmidt, a counsellor and psychotherapist with a professional background in nursing and midwifery. It is the fourth business she has built since becoming a business owner in 1993, giving her firsthand understanding of the decisions, responsibilities and practical pressures involved in running a small business.

Across healthcare, counselling and business ownership, Shirleen’s work has consistently required careful attention to confidentiality, ethical responsibility, professional boundaries and informed decision making. When AI began entering everyday professional conversations, she recognised how difficult it could be to separate useful opportunities from confusing, contradictory and sometimes unrealistic advice.

Ethical Resources brings these experiences together. Shirleen creates clear, practical resources to help professionals and small business owners benefit from AI while protecting personal information, maintaining accountability and preserving the trust at the heart of their work.

A responsible approach to a changing field

AI guidance continues to develop alongside new technologies, laws and professional expectations. Ethical Resources takes a careful, research informed approach, drawing on credible guidance and translating it into practical educational tools. Our resources support informed decision making but do not replace legal advice, professional standards or organisation specific policies.

Responsible AI use does not begin with knowing everything. It begins with knowing what to consider before information is shared, a tool is adopted or an AI generated response is used. Explore the Ethical Resources collection and begin building a safer, more confident approach to AI in your work.
